Science

Head of Faculty: Mrs L Powell

Department Introduction

We are very proud of Science at Herne Bay High School. The courses have been structured to engage students and hopefully to enthuse them, be informative and provide them with key skills for life. The curriculum is structured so that the sciences are taught separately through the disciplines of Biology, Chemistry and Physics and all students sit the separate GCSEs at the end of Year 11.

The Department is equipped with seven state of the art laboratories, a specialised sixth form teaching area, an open learning area and a computer suite. Our Department is supported by four specialist technicians who provide classroom support for all practical work and an HLTA who provides support to students within lessons

Science Clubs and Trips

We run revision classes prior to all major examinations and all of these are advertised in science lessons and all students are encouraged to attend.

A variety of trips, lectures and invited speakers all support the provision of Science over the year.

We also run a weekly STEM club and Robotics club, which we invite all students to attend.

What do our children study?

We currently offer a wide range of subjects in Science and tailor courses to meet the needs of our students. Key Stage 3 students follow a three-year programme and study within the separate areas of Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Our students are regularly monitored and assessed before reaching the end of the Key Stage by which time they can readily access our GCSE courses.

In Year 10, students follow the Single Science GCSE route and study Biology, Chemistry and Physics, therefore achieving three GCSEs at the end of Year 11.
In the current Year 11 cohort students are either studying Combined Science or Separate Sciences.

Science in the 6th form is growing from strength to strength and we currently offer A levels in Biology, Chemistry and Physics and BTEC National Extended Certificate in Applied Science course.
