Post-16 Football Academy Cup Final
13 May

Herne Bay High's Post-16 Academy side fell just short in a dramatic Tactic League Cup Final against Varsity Nine Academy, losing 4-3 in a penalty shoot-out after a hard-fought 1-1 draw.

The Bay dominated the opening half hour, dictating play and creating a string of promising opportunities. Bodie M came closest to breaking the deadlock, striking the woodwork. As temperatures soared, a drinks break saw both teams make tactical substitutions. Herne Bay took a deserved lead following a flowing move, culminating in a fine cross-field pass and a clinical finish by Jamie L. However, the advantage was short-lived after an error in the box allowed Varsity Nine to grab a soft equaliser just before half-time.

The Bay remained on the front foot after the interval. A volley from Vincent B forced a spectacular save from the Varsity keeper, who followed it up with a double stop to deny another outstanding one-on-one save against the same striker. B also had chances from set pieces, narrowly heading over on two occasions.

Despite a series of dangerous crosses into the box, the final touch continued to elude Herne Bay. At the other end, Varsity Nine nearly stole the win in the closing moments, hitting the post and testing our keeper with a late effort.

With no further goals, the match was decided on penalties. Varsity Nine emerged victorious, edging the shoot-out 4-3. Congratulations to them on their Cup success.

  • Final Points Tally: 47 (League Champions by 7 points)
  • Goal Difference: +56
  • First Team Debuts: 4 players during the 2024/25 season

The 2024/25 season has been a standout year for the Post-16 Academy in terms of player development. Four academy talents made the leap into senior football:

  • Jack H impressed as a first-team regular, making 8 starts before injury interrupted his season. His determination and physicality saw him return to the squad late in the campaign.
  • Alfie H, after a loan spell, integrated into the senior setup and became a consistent name on the team sheet during the second half of the season. He’s seen as a key prospect for the future by the club.
  • Vincent B and Jamie L, both exciting attacking talents, made their senior debuts and gained valuable experience, staking their claim for further involvement next season.
