Sociology is a popular course that focuses on the institutions within society and builds upon the interest students will have developed in their observations of life. It involves the study of society and the structures within it, for example the education system, families & households, crime, social stratification, and the impact of the media on society. Sociology aims to enable students to reflect on their own experience of the social world in which they live. This will include developing skills which will enhance their ability to participate more effectively in adult life, appreciating the significance of theoretical and conceptual issues in sociological debate, understanding sociological methodology, as well as acquiring knowledge and critical understanding of contemporary social processes and structures, for instance gender and class conflict in society.
In Sociology we encourage students to have an open mind but also be free to express their thoughts and opinions on a particular topic. One of the main aims of the subject is to teach the students to be able to express themselves in a non-biased and mature way.
Sociology offers students a range of career opportunities such as:
In December 2025, our Year 13 Sociology students attended the Sociology in Action study day in London, an enriching event designed to extend learning beyond the classroom and deepen understanding of contemporary sociological issues. The day featured a range of leading sociologists who explored key topics from the A‑level specification, including gender, inequality, race, education, crime and the media, helping students to see how sociological theory applies to real‑world contexts.
A highlight of the event was the talk by Professor Ann Oakley, whose session on feminism, gender and society was particularly inspiring. Drawing on her lifetime of influential research, she encouraged students to think critically about the social construction of gender and the continuing relevance of feminism within family life and wider society. Her clear explanations and engagement with student questions made complex ideas accessible and motivating, leaving a lasting impression on many of our students.
