We are very proud of Science at Herne Bay High School. The courses have been structured to engage and enthuse students, be informative and provide them with key skills for life. The curriculum is structured so that the sciences are taught through the disciplines of Biology, Chemistry and Physics and all students sit either Separate Science GCSEs or Combined Science at the end of Year 11.
The Department is equipped with seven state of the art laboratories, a specialised sixth form teaching area, as well as a range of theory-based classrooms. Our Department is supported by three specialist technicians who provide classroom support for all practical work and an HLTA who provides support to students both within and outside of lessons
We run morning intervention sessions for invited students, a lunchtime homework club, as well as revision classes prior to all major examinations. Revision sessions are advertised in science lessons and all students are encouraged to attend.
A variety of trips, lectures and invited guest speakers all support the provision of Science over the year. Some examples include: visits to CERN in Geneva, the London Science Museum, The Natural History Museum, workshops at the University of Kent, talks from STEM Ambassadors, events at Canterbury Christ Church University and live online talks through I’m a Scientist.
Our students have also competed in a range of challenges and competitions including the Amey Cup Challenge which they have won twice and the Tomorrow’s Engineers Robotics Challenge.
We currently offer a wide range of subjects in Science and tailor courses to meet the needs of our students. Key Stage 3 students follow a three-year programme and study Biology, Chemistry and Physics discretely within their Science lessons. Our students are regularly monitored and assessed before reaching the end of the Key Stage by which time they can readily access our GCSE courses.
In Year 10, students follow either Combined Science GCSE or the Separate Science GCSE route and study Biology, Chemistry and Physics.
In Year 11 students will either be entered for Combined Science or Separate Science GCSEs.
