Physical Education

Physical Education is situated in a purpose-built building located at the heart of the school. The department has shared use of the Bay Arena (a multi-purpose sports hall with spectator facilities) and sole use of an additional sports hall and gymnasium. Nearby the department has its own fitness suite and indoor climbing wall.

Outside facilities include grass pitches, an athletics track, jumping pits and throwing areas, two Astroturf pitches (one marked for football and hockey and one for tennis and netball) and a hard-court working area.

PE Clubs and Trips

The Department runs an extensive extra-curricular programme with clubs running before school, at lunchtimes and after school. Clubs are run by members of the PE Department, governing-body qualified coaches, and by other members of our schools teaching staff and community.

The clubs are attended by a large number of students and teams are also run in a wide range of sports.

A new programme of after school clubs is published each half term. The following activities are offered during the year:

What do our children study?

Key Stage 3 Physical Education

During years 7 and 8 all students have one double lesson (110 minutes) a week and one single lesson (55 minutes) every other week. In year 9 students have one double lesson (110 minutes) per week. There are 6 staff timetabled per half-year group, each half-year group is divided into three male and three female classes and grouped according to ability.

Year 7, 8 and 9 students follow a programme in line with the Key Stage 3 PE Curriculum. They are taught to use a range of tactics and strategies to overcome opponents in direct competition through badminton, basketball, cricket, football, handball, netball, rounders, rugby, softball, and table tennis. They also develop their technique and improve their performance in other competitive sports such as athletics, fitness, gymnastics, and trampolining. Students take part in outdoor and adventurous activities such as orienteering, climbing, and woodland activities which present intellectual and physical challenges and they are encouraged to work in a team, building on trust and developing skills to solve problems, either individually or as a group. The students will also analyse their performances compared to previous ones and demonstrate improvement to achieve their personal best.

Dance is taught separately within Performing Arts. All Year 7 students complete a unit of work in swimming off site.

Key Stage 4 Physical Education & Accreditation Opportunities

Students can opt for the OCR Cambridge Nationals in Sport Studies at Level 1/2. Students studying the course will have one double lesson (110minutes) and one single lesson (55 minutes) per week.

All students have one double lesson (110 minutes) a week and one single lesson (55 minutes) every other week of core PE in KS4.

Year 10 and 11 students follow a programme in line with the Key Stage 4 PE Curriculum. Post 16 Physical Education

OCR Cambridge Technical in Sport and Physical Activity Level 3 Extended Diploma.

Students opting for this triple award course get 21 lessons per week in Year 12 and Year 13. Seventeen units are studied over the 2 years.

Students taking this course are usually focused on entering the sports industry or are considering going to University.

OCR Cambridge Technical in Sport and Physical Activity Level 3 Extended Certificate.

Students opting for this single award course get 7 lessons per week in Year 12 and Year 13. Five units are studied over the 2 years.

Students taking this course usually study an extra two A Level courses and are looking to go onto University.

Sports Leaders Award

The Level 3 Certificate in Higher Sports Leadership is an option alongside the Year 11 and 13 OCR Cambridge Technical in Sport and Physical Activity courses.

Sports leadership is a strength of the school and we recognise that our 6th form sports leaders are highly effective role models to our younger students. We link closely with the School Sport’s Partnership as we provide sports leaders for their events to run successfully, and the Partnership provides our sports leaders with very real leadership opportunities.
