Changes to Mini Community Structure - September 2018

Dear Parents/Carers

As we approach the end of the summer term, I thought it an appropriate time to write and share with you some exciting changes that are happening at Herne Bay High.

We have, over the course of the last two terms, been evaluating how we can improve the support and academic challenge that students receive. We have looked at the mini community structure and there are going to be some changes that will come into effect from 4th September.

The existing five mini communities are being rebranded. We will now have five colleges, each with a new name. Each college will have a Head of College and a College Manager, their role is to provide rigorous academic and pastoral support to the students within their college, as well as providing frontline communication with families. The names of the colleges and their identities are detailed on the attached image.  As you can see, the existing colours will remain resulting in no need for any changes to uniform, additionally, students who are currently in a community will remain together within the new college. Each college will be co-located on the school site enabling the college team to be more effective at the start and end of the day, due to having greater access and contact with their students.

We have also made a slight change to the mentor structure. Vertical tutoring with mixed year mentor groups has proved very successful and will remain, however, due to the specific nature of the mentoring required at different stages of education we have made the following alterations.

  • Year 7 & 8 will be in mentor groups together
  • Year 9 & 10 will be in mentor groups together
  • Year 11 will now be separated enabling more focused transition work and exam preparation

These changes will mean that there will be some movement with mentors and students and this will be formally communicated to students in the next few weeks.

You may also be aware that we have introduced a new PE kit for September.  This was in response to the student voice and will freshen up the existing kit and add some new items such as skorts and branded waterproof outerwear. This will be available from Barnums in Herne Bay from the start of August.   Please be assured that there is no need to buy the new kit unless you are already looking to replace an item.

Can I take this opportunity to wish you all a very enjoyable summer.

Yours sincerely

Mr J Boyes
